Improving Candidate Interview Readiness with AWS and BEN Tech

Background
In Q4 2024, a strategic collaboration was launched between BEN Tech, a Black affinity group at Amazon; Algorythm, a community focused on Black software engineers; and Morgan Latimer Consulting, led by Anthony D. Mays, a seasoned software engineer and career coach. The initiative addressed a long-standing gap in relatable and effective technical interview preparation for underrepresented software engineering talent.
The program was born out of a conversation between Darius Robinson (leader at BEN Tech) and Esco Obong (leader of Algorythm) who recognized that many aspiring Black engineers lacked access to mentors who could demystify complex technical concepts like data structures and algorithms in an approachable way.
Morgan Latimer’s Role
To directly support this effort, AWS engaged Morgan Latimer Consulting for its proven expertise in technical interview coaching and curriculum development. Under the Statement of Work:
- Workshop Facilitation: Anthony D. Mays served as a guest speaker at a candidate prep session hosted by AWS, offering insider insights on technical interviews.
- Training Access: Morgan Latimer Consulting provided licenses to the Mastering Technical Interviews video course to selected participants, ensuring access to high-quality, self-paced instruction.
Program Impact
This partnership proved to be a high-leverage intervention in bridging the preparation gap for underrepresented engineers. The outcomes were both immediate and impressive:
- 125 applicants, 25 selected for the program.
- 5 participants secured new roles at top-tier tech companies.
- For AWS-specific candidates:
- 6 interviewed with AWS.
- 83% advanced to final interview rounds.
- 80% received an inclined decision (a strong indicator of hire readiness).
- 1 participant has already begun their role at AWS.
Conclusion
This case underscores the impact of combining community-driven initiative with expert-led preparation. Morgan Latimer Consulting’s contribution provided not only technical training but also mentorship rooted in lived experience—an essential ingredient in leveling the playing field for Black software engineers. Through targeted engagements like this, Morgan Latimer Consulting continues to help tech companies translate diversity intent into meaningful outcomes.
